Savannah during Christmas

Husband and I are thinking of going to Savannah, Georgia during the Christmas holidays. The threads here on Savannah as to where to go and eat have been very helpful. My question is, if we plan to arrive in Savannah on Christmas Day and stay for about 5, 6 days, will the shops and restaurants be open during that period? Or will they likely be closed for the holidays. Oh, we'll probably drive to Charleston too, so it would be helpful to know if the city closes down during the holiday season as well. Thanks!

Best answer: I'm in Charleston, and you'll find plenty to do over that week. PM me for questions

Best answer: I did precisely this trip last year around that time (we arrived the evening after Christmas, iirc). Savannah was definitely quiet and there were some closures, but most places were sparse but open. It was a fun trip, all told.

Best answer: It was ages ago, but I had an AWESOME time in Savannah one christmas.

Weather was temperate, yet moody and dramatic. There were a few cool foreign tourists about, and the rest were all locals. I had the sense I was experiencing Savannah as it really is, not Savannah as a Disney-like tourist destination.

House tours. Pubs. Restaurants. Walking around and taking in the flavor. Yay!

As a result of my Savannah Christmas Experience, it is the only other city in the US I still seriously consider living in (I'm from NYC, live in LA. Hate LA.)

My best meal was at the 17 Hundred 90 Inn. The reviews seem poor lately, though, so YMMV.

Have a great time. (I'm jealous!)

Watch out for Sundays, if you want to drink a bottle of wine. It's a dry county on Sundays!!

Savannah does indeed get slower and quieter during the Christmas week, but there's still plenty open, plenty to do and see, especially downtown. It may or may not be cold. The chance of snow is zero.
