Can't remember, need help: Work of fiction about evolution

My Amazon- and Google-fu have failed me. Read this book 6-7 years ago. Novel about evolution. Started with small creature (mammalian, I think) and followed it's life story over millennia as it changed into next evolutionary form, and so on until it became hominid.

Ring any bells? Thanks in advance.

Darnit, you're right. For some reason I briefly considered that but dismissed it. Had it in my head it wasn't Baxter. Derp.
