Buy the new iPod Touch now?

Is there any technical reason for me to not buy the new iPod Touch that was released this week? Are there glitches in it would cause me to wait for an update? Also, I expect to use it only for apps and a limited library of music just as I used my old one. Why would I need more that 8GB?

The only reason I can think of is if you decide you want to carry some video too - it eats up space quickly....

Since no one has one yet, there's nothing about any glitches to report. As it uses the same OS and has shared components with the iPhone 4, it should be pretty safe to buy. Some will say to wait but I've been buying Apple products close to launch day for years and to date haven't had problems. Of course there will be new bugs discovered so an iOS4.1.1 update will come out in a few weeks.

The video camera is not too shabby on the iPhone 4 and since the new iPod touch has the same thing, I'd think if you do decide to record video you might consider the 16gb or even larger. Rental/Purchased movies and TV will take up a lot of space too. You won't know how much you'll use it until after you get it. I alway try to buy more storage than I think I'll need. But then again, I have a terabyte of music and videos I could put on the device.

As a rule for any new gizmo, wait a week or two after they're in the wild (normal people have them) before buying in if you're concerned about any issues. No one has the new iPod yet, so I'd cool your heels for now.

Yeah, wait until they're in the wild first.

The video camera is not too shabby on the iPhone 4 and since the new iPod touch has the same thing--

Actually, the rear-facing camera isn't up to the specs of the iPhone 4.

The 8GB is, picking up on another of John Gruber's points, priced like the cheapest bottle of wine on a restaurant wine list, while the 64GB is priced like the most expensive one. Apple wants you to buy the 32GB.

...but the front-facing video camera is probably the same. D'oh.

I've already not bought one. It takes rotten stills compared to the iPhone 4. Something like 0.6MP to the latter's 5MP. Deal-breaker for this boy.

I ordered and then cancelled shortly thereafter on account of the camera; the reviews which should be out early next week will clear up exactly how bad it is. It would depend on how much you think you'd use the still camera, and how annoyed you'd be at seeing the iPod come out next year with an Amazing Improved Camera.

Yep, the two cameras are probably the same hardware on both sides, unlike the iPhone 4 which has a pretty sexy rear camera (I'll be doing some pro work with it). I am also going to guess the touch probably only has half the RAM of the phone as another cost-saving measure, and of course the battery won't be as large as the phone either. (I am mostly just convincing myself that my $700 contract-free phone wasn't a stupid alternative, and I am still happy with it.)

I'd suggest the $300 price point, though, as opposed to the cheapest one. As this device has the new processor and better screen, it will likely be supported for at least 3 years so there will be a lot of apps and data for you to deal with until it is time to retire and/or jailbreak it.

I ordered one, and anxiously await its arrival.

While I'm mildly disappointed that it doesn't have an Awesome Camera, I'm also okay with that, since my (non-smart) phone camera is even worse, and getting photos off of it is such a painful process that I never use it. I'm looking forward to the improved screen and OS. I've carried my 1st gen everywhere with me for years, and look forward to doing the same with the new one. I ordered the 32 gig, btw.

So, it depends. If you want a device like an ipod touch that has a good camera, then you should probably wait. But if the awesomeness of the camera is less important to you, then, well, yeah.

I'm also looking forward to recording cat videos!

I had an 8gb for a while but after loading a few movies on it for the gym, guess what? FULLL....so I would recommend a higher capacity. But at the same time, I would recommend a higher capacity & an older iphone so if you ever want to switch to AT&T for a few months to a prepaid, you can.
