The Assistant's Magician

Are there any magic acts where the magician and assistant switch roles?

Or perhaps a setup where the "magician" calls up an audience member (actually the Magician) who upstages them?

Well, there was Arrested Development episode that revolved around such a plot-line. It's the final countdown!

Syllables beat me to it.

A multi-stage trick with hidden identities?!

The Pendragons may qualify, but both are magicians in their own right, it's just that Charlotte "acts" as the assistant. I've seen them perform live, they truly are great.

and yes I am aware of all the GOP comments on their home page. I doubt they've updated recently, as Jonathon has had some "issues" in the recent years.

Penn and Teller both do the magic. Teller is definitely not just "The Assistant".

There are a number of assistant boxed/hoisted/locked up where the magician brifely covers himself (well it has historically been a male endeavor) and switches to the assistant and the magician is in the box. Doug Henning switched costumes during the fast switch.

Response by poster: My question was indeed inspired by that episode of Arrested development! When GOB first put forth the idea I hit pause, and began to think that maybe there was a specific name for the deceit, as their are for various confidence acts ("The Spanish Prisoner", etc.). It also seems like the sort of device employed in literature or film, sort of like the court Jester or Fool staging an elaborate performance that (homicidally) turns the table on the audience. But basically a one-off trick that wouldn't work in the real world of Name Brand magicians..

Then I resumed playback, and was rewarded with the fairly succinct definition of "a multi-stage trick with hidden identities" - which only nets Arrested Development hits, of course.
