Fixing a brand new Nokia N95

Just bought a brand new phone (Nokia N95) from eBay (a friend warned me about this). It turned it on fine. Let me set up the city, date, time and once it went to the normal screen it said "Sim card activation failed" a few seconds later it flashed a few times and turned off and now the screen doesn't work. Is there anything I can do besides send it back to Hong Kong?

Can I or should I try flashing it or something?

The phone turns on and off fine and the keys work like normal when it's turned on but the screen doesn't work anymore.

A couple of silly questions (please forgive me if they don't apply): Re: SIM card failure, do you know if it was unlocked when you bought it, e.g. not tied to a specific carrier? Re: screen, is the phone fully charged? Also, sometimes removing the battery and putting it back in helps. Good luck!
