The Way by Fastball.

They are not explicitly on the run from the law, according to the lyrics, but they will eventually be brought up on child abandonment charges.

"Banditos" by the Refreshments is pretty terrible (although I have to confess a small, shameful enjoyment), but fits the parameters.

Bonnie & Clyde '03 by Jay-Z and Beyonce. Sort of. It's also about designer clothing.

Dylan's contribution to this genre (well, one of 'em – I'm sure there are more) is "Romance in Durango." Not sure how long that link will last – Dylan songs are taken down from the internet early and often – so grab it while you can.

Also "Borrowed Wings" by Jim White about two lovers who escaped from Hell (or Death perhaps)

"So we return to Earth on borrowed wings, stolen from the shoulders of sweet dreaming angels.."

I Think We're Alone Now by Tiffany always had this vibe. It doesn't specifically mention the law, but hey.

And oh man, you have to watch the video to just to see how absolutely HORRIBLE it is.

The Deeper In by Drive By Truckers deals with both the topic of lovers on the run AND brother/sister incest! BONUS!

It is not precisely a 'lovers on the run' tune, but I believe all of these songs owe something to the classic, genre-founding "El Paso" by Marty Robbins, which has lovers and running, but not together.

Trudy and Dave by John Hiatt

Didn't mean to do it baby, but I did it for love
The same shot his Daddy heard before him
A shot that can really blow you away
And when it is fired his mama told him
"David, you'll follow it to your grave"

Well Trudy and Dave, those crazy kids
Had a baby of their own and you heard what they did
In the middle of a strip mall shots rang out
Shots heard all over the world no doubt

'Cause it was there in the paper the very next day
'Bout a couple and a baby and a Chevrolet
Who shot up an automatic teller machine
Took the money for the laundry and drove away clean

... and stretching back even further, we find the 1932 classic "Gambling Bar Room Blues," an interesting and bloody tale of booze and murder by the father of country music, Jimmie Rodgers. "Police, police, police / You're just as drunk as me / I'll grab your big eight-wheeler / And make for the deep blue sea..."

Damn. Came to the thread to suggest "Trudy & Dave", but was beaten to it.

Maybe Warren Zevon's "Lawyers, Guns and Money"? Kinda sorta?

1952 barely qualifies and you already had Shane and Dixie. Never mind...

Chris Whitley - Although I don't recall any of the other songs specifically referring to lovers on the run, much of his music is about romantic, rumbling dirty gritty outlaws on the run. Its amazing guitar blues. He was a hero.

Oh yeah... as an example, his Big Sky Country was very at home in the movie Thelma and Louise at the very beginning of his career.

Not sure if this counts, but Unworthy of Your Love. Not so much running from the law, but like, caught. Hrm.

And probably and even bigger stretch, but Somewhere, from WSS. I guess it depends on your definition of law.

"Not Gonna Get Us" by t.A.T.u. is about two female lovers running away together (presumably from the law, based on the beginning of the music video).

David Lee Roth "Big Trouble" (couple is definitely on the run, but the reasons are debatable).

John Hiatt, "Tennessee Plates"

"...It was somewhere in Nevada, it was cold outside
She was shiverin' in the dark, so I offered her a ride
Three bank jobs later, four cars hot wired
We crossed the Mississippi like an oil slick fire

"If they'd known what we was up to they wouldn't let us in
and now we landed in Memphis like original sin
Elvis Presley Boulevard to the Graceland gates
See we were lookin' for a Cadillac with Tennessee plates..."

Point of personal privilege: the song title is simply "The Road Goes On Forever."

Others....

"Six Gun" by Reckless Kelly

"The Ballad of Tommy & Marla" by the Rugburns

"Seven Spanish Angels" by Willie Nelson and Ray Charles

"The Raven and the Coyote" also by Robert Keen

Love this question! I have a playlist titled "Bonnie & Clyde" that started with "Take the Money and Run", and also includes the "Bonnie & Clyde '03" mentioned upthread! Also included:

Tweeter and the Monkeyman- Traveling Wilburys

1000 miles per hour- OK Go

Summerland- Everclear

Learning how to Smile
- Everclear

F.I.D.O.- The Dirtbombs

Admittedly, the last few are more about couples just flat out running away, but the traveling Wilburys at least seem perfect!

"Bandits" by Josh Ritter

All those kisses that we stole
they're all cast in fire and gold.
in a gold no one can weigh,
we made out like bandits, babe.

And all those Bonnies, all those Clydes,
they're amateurs to you and I,
and coming home's a prison break
we made out like bandits, babe.

And all that love, all those mistakes
and what else can a poor man make,
do you wonder if there was
any rich folks rich as us?

And they say those two won't get far
in the backseat of a car
but we pulled off the interstate
and out like bandits babe.

and we pulled off the interstate
and made out like bandits, babe.

Notorious by Confederate Railroad. Not exactly on the mark, but close and a good song.

Definitely Bonnie and Clyde by Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot. Gainsbourg did do an English language version, but I prefer the original. There have been so many covers of the song. Mick Harvey has done the best job (imo) with English translation covers of Gainsbourg songs. He did it with Anita Lane for his 'Intoxicated Man' record, but he also did a live version with PJ Harvey. Still, you can't improve on the original.
