How to merge old iTunes data?

iTunes: In the transition to a NAS device, I lost the xml file that held all my playlists, ratings and playback counts, so I had to start over with a new library. I have found a backup, but it's incomplete as I have since added quite a lot of new media. How can I best get my newly-found ratings and playback counts back in?

XML files are text, you know. It should be possible to edit with a normal text editor, and to copy critical sections from one to another. (As long as you're careful about nesting and syntax.)

You could probably do a unix diff between the two files to generate a patch file. And then use patch to merge the old file with the newer file, fixing conflicts by hand.
