Michigan to Cumberland Falls, KY

Any tips for driving from Michigan to Somerset Kentucky and then taking in Cumberland Falls?

We have to drive to Somerset next week for a medical appointment and the map indicates few long stretches without turns. We'll probably pickup a GPS to help out but we wonder if those who know the route have any tips. Also, we'll be so close that we want to stay overnight at Cumberland Falls. Is this unrealistic considering the mid-nineties forecasted? Are there any camping tips specific to this area? One of us loves to camp and the other would rather be boiled in oil so we must negotiate a fine line between making memories and comfort, on a budget.

Best answer: Cumberland Falls is a state park and has a campground, as well as a lodge and cottages, with also a sit-down restaurant in the park itself, if that's any help. The park seems to have some (small) events going on, as well. Apologies if you already knew all this.

Response by poster: Thanks, dilettante, we know nothing as we just got news of the appt. We'll go online but we trust the MeFi mind best.

I have been to Cumberland more times than I can count, and I can attest to the natural splendor of the park. I haven't stayed in the lodge or cottages for years, but if memory serves, both are quite nice and comfortable.

As for the forecast, I wouldn't sweat it. I live in KY, and right this second it is a breezy, cool evening, after a sweltering day. Down in Cumberland, the temp is likely to be quite bearable, though hot. If it suits your fancy, I highly recommend one of the rafting trips down there. They're a blast.

In any event, go there. You'll have a nice time.
