Cheap eats / beers in Milwaukee?

Am staying in Milwaukee for a few days and would like to hear if anyone knows any cheap, but good restaurants and/or bars (want to spend a maximum of $20 per meal) in the downtown area.

There also appears to be a huge corporate America convention in town, so bonus points for places that are less well-known.

Best answer: I don't know about downtown but there's a great/kinda divey bar out in Greendale called Ray and Dot's with $1 PBR tall boys.

Best answer: If you're willing to take a bus, go to Wisconsin Ave hop on the 30 bus going east (via Downer or Maryland) and get off at Prospect and Brady. Brady St. has a lot of good, cheap restaurants and bars. Apollo has tasty but super cheap Greek food. Anodyne is a great coffee shop that serves cheap and delicious breakfasts. Rochambo is another coffee shop but they also serve alcohol. The Nomad World Pub has a good beer selection and is a low-key, kinda divey but pleasant bar. If you want something a bit fancier but still reasonably priced, there's Crisp, a hookah bar/pizza place/bar with live DJs several nights a week.

Best answer: If you wouldn't mind soup in the summer, Soup's On in the Third Ward is both really good and cheap. It's roughly a 10-20 minute from most places downtown.

There's also Alterra in the Fifth Ward though that's a bit more of a walk (or a short bus ride).

Best answer: If you like Ethiopian there is Alem on Wisconsin just a block east of Water. It is great and fairly cheap.

Best answer: Comet Cafe is amazing. Great beer selection, amazing food. Just north of Downtown, worth the short bus ride.

AJ Bombers has great burgers and it on the north side of downtown. They've been featured on a few TV shows, but maintain an awesome down-to-earth feel, with free peanuts. (Way better than 5 Guys, for sure)

Immediately south of downtown (in the Third Ward) is the Milwaukee Public Market which has all sorts of vendors and food and is a nice place to hang out for lunch.

Seconding Comet Cafe. More traditional cheap Milwaukee food: George Webb's for late-night diner breakfast; Abu's, Jerusalem of the Gold for Middle Eastern; Real Chili for god-awful, yet stangely addicting chili; The King and I for Thai, (though maybe a bit pricey); Ma Fishers as an alternative late-night diner; Mayura for Indian; Beans and Barley for vegitarian; and Stack'd for burgers.

I haven't tried it in a long time, but based on its name I think it must be Milwaukee's Best .
