A depressing life

BookFilter. Looking for this book. Written by an American. It's about a girl, born in the 30s, I think. She goes to Barnard College and her life turns out to be rather depressing and meaningless (amongst other things becomes promiscuous, drinks, ends up alone). I remember it being depressing but not cruel, but not much else. Any ideas?
