Help Me and Others be a Great Friend

What are the necessary qualities for a good friend, or a lasting friendship? I will start - friendship should be reciprocal, both parties showing interest in the other, taking turns initiating conversations, outings, phone calls, etc. Friends should be honest with each other, but in a loving way. What are some other qualities? I want to be a great friend to my friends, and I think I am, but I am finding that there are many people out there without a clue toward the basics of friendship. I want to find or do a comprehensive study of the subject. Thanks in advance!

p.s. not really concerned about how to make friends, it is being a good friend to the friends you already have that I am interested in. Also, what is critical mass of good friends that you can actually be a good friend to? I vote 4.

This post was deleted for the following reason: questions that seems that you just want to talk about the topic and where you answer your own question are not really what ask metafilter is for. If you're trying to find sources, that's one thing. If you just want to talk, it's entirey another. -- jessamyn

Feels a bit like chatfilter... there is no clear answer to this question.

I take it you mean "maximum," not "critical mass"?

HuronBob: It apparently wasn't chatfilter when it was asked before. One of the mods even gave a long answer.

Perhaps it would help if you expounded on this statement and actually wrote out what this people do or don't do that indicate they don't know how to be friends.
