How to minimize mobile data usage.

I just got a mobile internet stick for my laptop: how do I minimize data usage? I don't want some huge software update downloading in the background without my permission, etc.

I'm on a Mac.
I have set up iGoogle to get feeds of my most frequently visited sites so I don't have to load a media-intensive page every time I want to see what's new on a site.
Any tips?

Sounds like you need Little Snitch.

Install ad- and flash-blockers for your browser. And may be turn off images, although that can break some sites.

Response by poster: I can't seem to get iGoogle to refresh the feeds manually and they don't refresh often enough for my liking. I'll have to find another reader. I'll look into the ad-blocker also, and I've disabled my update auto-downloads. That's a good start!
