Question: Fish restaurants in Charlotte

Charlotte, NC -- We'll be there for a long weekend and need recommendations for restaurants serving fresh/healthy grilled fish (or even fish tacos). Want someplace casual (not necessarily cheap, but where jeans are OK). Not interested in shrimp, crab or lobster. Thanks.

If you're near the center city, try LaVecchia's in the 7th Street Station. The entrance is on 6th Street between College and Brevard. Zink on N. Tryon Street between 5th and 6th is fairly new; its owners run several other well-regarded restaurants in town. Blue, in the Hearst Tower, is pretty good, from what I hear. Palamino Grille has great calamari and I think I had really good salmon there once. (Our restaurant outings are mostly to food-on-a-tray places these days, unfortunately, what with the youngins.)

If you're near SouthPark, a restaurant that's opening tomorrow is McCormick & Schmick (a national/regional chain?). It's adjacent to SouthPark Mall. It's going to be packed the next few weekends, I assume, as most new "hot" restaurants are. There is also Upstream, at Phillips Place in the SouthPark area.

All of these are a bit more than casual, so probably not jeans, but Charlotte is a business-casual kind of town so you could get away with khakis and a polo shirt or sweater.

There is a great, dive-y fish taco place in the NoDa arts district just north of Uptown, Cabo Fish Taco. It's very casual and fun.

Hope this helps!

One of my favorite places in Charlotte is 'Lava Bistro' at University Place. They're not a seafood restaurant specifically, but they do serve it, and their meals are all around great and very reasonable. University Place, if you're not familiar, is right off 85, take the Harris Blvd. exit (there are two, A & B -- you want the one that points toward the shopping centers, I think it's A). Click here.
