Mobile internet in Spain for cheap?

What are my options for using mobile internet in Spain?

I'm going to Spain for a month and taking my Wi-fi enabled netbook with me. I'll mainly be staying in Valencia, but I'll also be travelling around the surrounding area. I will probably be able to find wi-fi internet cafes and such, but I also want to be able to have the backup of an internet dongle for those times when I can't get to an internet cafe.

I've been googling, but the highest recommended company that will allow me to purchase a dongle in the UK is Vodafone, who want to charge an exorbitant amount of money for roaming charges.

I'm only going to be using this particular connection for a month, so I don't want a contract (24 months seems to be standard). Really fast speeds aren't all that important, but not having to pay £5 for 5 megabytes of net access is. I'd prefer to buy a dongle in the UK and take it with me, but I'm prepared to buy one in Spain if that will be cheaper.

What are my options?

Vodafone Spain has an English website - and the option to call customer service in English. Of course, €39 for 400MB or €59 for 1GB wouldn't be very competitive rates in the UK.

You could also look at the Prepaid data in Spain forum who have a bit of an overview of the packages available.

I'd prefer to buy a dongle in the UK and take it with me, but I'm prepared to buy one in Spain if that will be cheaper.

Usually when you buy a ~£30 pay-as-you-go mobile internet package in the UK it comes with an unlocked usb dongle that accepts a SIM card. So you could buy the dongle in the UK and just pick up a SIM card in Spain.

Do you have a phone that you can tether? When I was there in June of lat year I got I sim from Yoigo and it was 1 euro a day for unlimited data. They also have a dongle.

Movistar and Vodaphone are both much more expensive. There are several discount companies who use their networks and have better prices.
