Where in the U.S.A. can I find palaces or estates of East Indian architecture?
I am currently location scouting for a Hollywood feature film. We need an Indian palace or estate that is located somewhere in the United States of America.
And, by Indian, I do mean East Indian or South Asian Indian, not American Indian (or Native American).
Also, we do NOT want a Hindu temple since they're too religious-looking. The place should either be residential or it should at least appear to be residential if we decorate it properly. The architecture definitely needs to look as if the place is in India.
Ideally, this property is located as close as possible to Los Angeles (maybe Northern California or Las Vegas or Phoenix), but we're open to going anywhere in the United States.
The exact schedule is still TBD, but the filming would be sometime before the end of the year. The property owner would be protected by insurance and a contract, he or she would be paid for our time there, and everything would be fully restored afterwards. Suggestions?

Best answer: This AskMe post showed a picture of an abandoned palace in Houston.

You might check the temple and retreat center of the Self-Realization Fellowship in Encinitas. I used to live a couple blocks away and frequently went there to walk through the gardens. It's not all "temple-looking," although it does have the golden domes.

The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Bartlett, Illinois (Chicago suburbs) might work. The Mandir looks like a temple, but the visitor's center might work as an estate (especially the main lobby inside -- something like this, IIRC, but smaller). I'm thinking the sculptures on the grounds could also work as part of an estate.

Response by poster: We've considered Brand Library.
It's got a great look, but probably not spacious enough.
That place in Houston is great. Thank you!
I'm now looking into that one.
The Self-Realization Fellowship in Encinitas (and Pacific Palisades and Mt. Washington too) probably wouldn't work. Too small, and they haven't been open to filming before.
The place near Chicago is on the maybe list. Thank you too!
Any other ideas out there?
