Expensive is not my bag

I want this bag. I don't want to pay that price.

I want this bag. I don't want to pay that price (I know it's not THAT much, but I'm trying to be thrifty right now). It's not on ebay or anywhere like that because it's made by a local designer, so it's not mass produced enough to find it on the cheap.

So can you help me find something similar, for cheaper? Keep in mind the dimensions of the bag are very small--about the size of an open hand--and the strap is long (the bag sits at the hip). I would prefer leather (yeah, I know, it costs more, but I just hate the feel of vinyl or pleather or pvc or whatever), and the color doesn't matter so much. I just want to find something that looks as close to it as possible, for something like under $100.

Thanks!

Response by poster: I should also probably mention that I'm open to online suggestions as well as stores in NYC.

You might be able to find someone on etsy.com to make something similar for less.

Did you look on Etsy.com? They have a ton of bags, some leather, and some cheap.

(To clarify, BusyBusyBusy is talking about Etsy Alchemy, where you request custom items and take bids from various sellers, while wyzewoman is talking about searching the shops for an already-made bag.)

Can you flesh out just what it is about that particular bag that's got you? Is it that particular pocket, the little folds?

On first glance I thought 'Sometimes Roots does stuff a wee bit similar' and went off to check, but this is it for the moment, it seems, and it's not very same-y at all. (But just the right size and on sale, so included here anyway)

Response by poster: I like the simplicity of it. No flashy tassels or ugly zippers or decorative stitching/buttons or silly shiny things. I also really like the U shape of it.

Okay, here are some possibilities:

Mini Ruffle Button Purse from Charlotte Russe.

Cole Haan Zippered Mini Crossbody Bag from Nordstrom.

Zappos has a ton of options like this from Fossil, this from Dooney & Burke or this from The Sak. I searched handbags, leather, crossbody and under $100 to find a bunch of options at Zappos.

I hope you find something you like!

Well, if you're really being thrifty (like, thrift store thrifty), I can give you an idea of what to look for. I happen to have a vintage, Coach leather purse that's tiny and sits at the hip. I got it for $10 at my local thrift store. And everywhere I look, (flea markets, garage sales, other thrift stores, consignment shops) there always seems to be at least one vintage Coach bag.

Looking at Etsy, apparently I found a really good deal. But the purses on Etsy are still pretty cheap, and I'm sure you'll find more if you check out a few second-hand venues.

Ebags had a few nice choices under a search for cross-body bags.
Latico Mimi
LeDonne Mini

You can have my coupon code from them, (25% off and free shipping) but it expires today, EMHB1DSALE

My Baggallini bag (similar to this) is small and cute like that, and about $30. I love it because it can be used alone or like a large-ish wallet that I can easily move from backpack to evening bag.

I've been seeing a ton of these bags for the past few months at clothes/accessories stores -- try H&M and other trendy/"fast fashion" stores like Zara, Forever 21, and so on.

I just saw a whole lot of similar bags at Macy's for about $90. They were cross-body and small.

Fossil's Shirred Flap Mini

Cole Haan's Ali Mini Crossbody is similar to shebookish's Cole Haan suggestion. LunaBoston also has them in snake and neon pink.

Funny enough, I just discovered Corrente bags this week (and through the HH site too - ah, summer sales). The designer has an Etsy store so I don't know how the etiquette with Etsy Alchemy works.

If you're looking at bags from people who have expensive bags for sale, you're going to be disappointed. (And, honestly, they're usually crap.)

As stated above, Etsy is your friend. I'd advise going to an arts/crafts festival (e.g., Artscape, if youre anywhere near Baltimore) where you can try the merchandise out, but not everyone has that option.
