Name that 20th century European artist

I'm trying to think of the name of a male, Eastern-European artist that made paintings of dark, unsettling landscapes. I remember being linked to a very basic webpage of his work, and I wish I could remember more details about his work. As for time period, maybe 20's-70's. Again, sorry for the lack of details. I want to say he was not well-known and did the landscapes in the 40's or 50's.

Thanks for the heads-up on Beksinski. He's my new favorite artist.

No problem, DieHipsterDie. He's one of my favorites as well. Every painting seems to tell a hideous story. It's too bad prints and posters of his work are so hard to find.

Max Ernst? 1, 2, 3
Although he is pretty well known and not quite Eastern European.

Anslem Keifer? Some of his paintings are landscape-like, and certainly very creepy. Also pretty well known though.
