Is Neil Worth It This Time Around?

Has anyone seen Neil Young on his current solo tour? If so, what did you think?

I need to decide whether to shell out huge bucks, plus go through TicketMaster (which I am loath to do) in order to see Neil in Portland. Tickets start to go on sale at 10 monday morning. Anyone is Houston, Austin, Dallas, DC, etc seen this show? I am on the fence.

(I have seen him around 10 times over the years. . .he's great, he's horrible, but he'll never do the expected.)

Do you love Neil Young? He almost died a few years back. The fact that he is still around is a blessing to me. Asking this seems impossible because I always think he's "worth it". The question is whether I have the time or if I have something else I need to dedicate the disposable income to.

You really can't buy tickets for shows at the Shnitz without going through TM? There's no one box office somewhere that sells for PDX events?

Best answer: Well, here is a setlist, if that helps. Based on this, I am on the fence (if he plays L.A.). On the downside, the shows are only 90 minutes, and he seems to play almost exactly the same songs every night- I hate when artists get in a rut like that, and there's zero chance of a surprise.

On the plus side, there are some classic songs in there, and no sign of "Rockin' in the free world" or "Let's roll" type stuff.

I am 100 miles away and employed. It would be hard to show up at the Schnitz on a Monday morning at 10 although possibly I could ask someone to do that for me.

My dad saw him in Austin last night and really enjoyed it. Concert was almost exactly 90 minutes, which I think he found a bit disappointing, but he said the songs he chose were good, especially "Helpless," which he did on the organ. He also happily reported happily that he smiled, barely, once, and only turned his back to the audience a few times. I take it this was different than when he saw him in the past?

I sent my father to the Louisville show as an early Father's Day present. Dad was very pleased, although I don't know what would have had to happen with the show for him not to have been. Dad's girlfriend also apparently really enjoyed it, although she may have been as interested in the opening act. Despite some billing as acoustic, he does play electric for part of it. The ticket sales were completely fucked up, though, due to a merger between LiveNation and Ticketmaster. Hopefully by now they have that fixed.

I saw it, and I liked it... but I'm a super fan. A more casual fan may find it kind of boring. It is not his best show ever, but it is good.

Friends of mine saw him in SC last weekend and said he was absolutely worth the $$. They drove 1.5 hrs to see him, spent the night in a hotel (priceline - good deal), and said even with the gas & hotel figured in, it was well worth it. I know they've seen him before, but not 10 times. Still, I vote go!

On The Best Show on WFMU, a caller indicated it was pretty not so good. You could hear him talking about it here. It is the first show indicated (June 1st)

Response by poster: Thank you all. I decided against it. And the fact that Ticketmaster's ticket selection was really poor (they will probably withhold the good ones for their reselling site to make more profit) was the nail in the coffin.
