Underwriters of the world unite

How do I go about forming mutually beneficial transnational business relationships from scratch?
I work as an Insurance Underwriter for an Insurance Company in the UK and work out of a regional office. As the only person in the office underwriting the class of business I feel somewhat removed from my peers. Ideally I would like to form correspondence based relations with people in similar situations to share knowledge and strategy and find some different perspectives. Obviously default networking would seem the most obvious answer but the UK insurance market is small - specifically the class I write - and corresponding with fellow underwriters I am competing against is not a solution. I am part of a society with over 6000 members though the society and the majority of its members are based in the US. Also, although there is a searchable members directory and I could feasibly search out members (eg. Those based in the US to overcome the problems of liaising with competitors and to get a different perspective etc) I am uncertain as to the etiquette in firing off emails to random professionals overseas. I think if I received such an email I may be somewhat suspicious to its intent. Any suggestions greatly received either in thread or memail.

Response by poster: msbutah: Thanks for your response. I have searched high and low for such a forum as was of similar mindset but to no avail. I would not know how to go about setting up such a site but like your suggestion of working with a resource website to try and persuade them to set one up.
