How do I Play Warcraft Against Computer Opponent?

Which is the version of Warcraft 2(?) where I can play different maps against computer opponents?
I used to play Warcraft 10 or 12 years ago (I'm almost certain it was Warcraft II) where you could pick a map and then play against computer opponents. I believe the classic map, when playing as Orcs, you would start in the bottom right corner.
I just grabbed a copy of Warcraft II (Tides of Darkness) and the play options seem to be either 1 player campaign mode or multiplayer against other humans via modem.
I'm not seeing an option to play against the computer except in the campaign mode, which isn't what I want.
Does anyone know which version of Warcraft allowed for playing against (multiple) computer opponents?

I bought the original Warcraft II (Tides of Darkness) in 1995, and I never played it against human opponents. It came with a map editor, and I used that to create single player maps (in PUD format) to play against multiple computer opponents. I don't remember how I actually opened those maps in the game itself though. Maybe if you select the Multiplayer option and pick a single player map it will work?

Response by poster: jedicus: Battle.Net seems to be intended for playing against human opponents, not computer ones, unless I'm misreading it. Also, I'm pretty sure I wasn't using Battle.Net previously when I played many years ago.
burnmp3s: After I select the Multiplayer option from the menu, the options are
Direct Connect
modem
IPX network
which seems intended to play against other humans.
There isn't a way to pick a map to play.
Thanks for the help so far.

Battle.Net is a multiplayer service, yes, but "Warcraft II: Battle.Net Edition" also included playing against AI opponents on non-campaign maps.

Try going to IPX network, picking a game and setting all the other players to be 'computer'.

Response by poster: lebannen: When I try to connext to the IPX network it gives me an error message, but that might be because I'm on my school's wireless network right now. I'll try that when I get home.

Have you downloaded and installed the patches? They might give you more options (in any case, they fix lots of bugs).
Patch for the original game
Patch for the expansion
If you were to buy the battle.net edition, it would almost certainly contain the option to play single-player custom games. It's not just a version that allows you to play over the internet; it's also a more modern version that's compiled to run natively in Windows and adds some other features.

It's buried in some obscure multiplayer setting; it's under single player, and it will definitely work on the original non-battle.net edition.
But: I don't specifically remember this, and no longer own a computer that will run warcraft II -- sad face -- so can't check myself... but according to this page you have to complete the campaign before it will show up which is probably why you're not seeing it.
