A world beyond that Star Wars Kid...

Over the weekend, I discovered the genius that is Alex Day, aka Nerimon. What else have I been missing out on, YouTube wise?

Up until now, I thought YouTube was primarily for two things: clips of old shows, and stupid cat videos (with the typical variations: numa numa, Dramatic Look Gopher, etc). Now, I'm finding that there's a whole other world out there.

So, what else have I been missing? Who are your favorite YouTubers, and why?

I love Brad Neeley's Babycakes' Diary entries.

Why? Well, here's entry 3. I think it's pretty self explanatory.

I don't have specific recommendations, but one thing that YouTube is good for that might not be immediately obvious is instructional videos—especially for the sort of thing that's not easily described in words or even still images. So if I need to know something like how to tie a bowtie, or how to prepare an artichoke, or something like that, I'm likely to go looking on YouTube.

Re: what DevilsAdvocate posted, I learned how to cut a mango from Youtube.

Also, a bit harder-core, Youtube/edu has great college lectures. I particularly like Stanford and MIT's.

Best answer: It's especially good for cooking videos, once you find a solid source (some people clearly have no idea what they're doing either in front of a camera, a stove, or in some especially tragic cases, both).

My favorites are Cooking With Dog (no, not actually with dog as an ingredient) and Chef John's Food Wishes. The things that I've tried to make from these videos have been great.

Dave Can Cook is also a great cooking series. I can't honestly say that I've cooked anything from this series, but the videos are very entertaining to watch.

I happened to post this article on better-than-you-might-think fan films to the blue the other day (scroll to the bottom for links).

Well, if you enjoy Nerimon, I presume you know about his BFF Charlie? It's love at first sight, I tell you what.

And that being said, you might as well be made aware of the Nerdfighter Nation.

DFTBA!

Nthing John and Hank Green (aka Vlogbrothers). The nice thing about them is that they have enough of a following that you can catch links to other awesome YouTubers just by watching their videos and seeing who they're talking about (see: Mickeleh, Meekakitty, Julia Nunes, Molly Lewis, etc.).

Jangie mentioned some great cooking videos, but, for me, nothing beats Manjula's Kitchen. Learn how to make delicious Indian food.

For music, Brett Domino might be up your alley. I've enjoyed his medleys.

I also like the Songs from the Shed series of folky live recordings (from a shed).

I really like John Kilduff aka Mr. Let's Paint TV. He's weird and inspiring. Or something.

Uncle Jay Explains the News is good too. He explains the news. Like to kids, but with humor/humour.

The Gregory Brothers are Autotuning the News, which is the news, only autotuned. Also with humor/humour.

Cracked's vids are good. If you loved 5 Musicians who are also Theiving Bastards or the 7 Most Disastrous Typos Of All Time then you'll love their videos. If you didn't love those article, then save some time and don't bother with their channel.
