Oh! my back

Help me find a doctor in Seattle to go to about my back pain. Difficulty: someone covered by my Premera Blue Cross insurance.

A couple years ago, I was experiencing pain in my leg which later turned to numbness and got me to go to the doctor. An MRI showed a herniated disc and I eventually got a epidural steroid injection which seemed to help.

Recently, my lower back proper is hurting me quite a bit especially when bending and I'm guessing it's probably the same thing. I'm pretty active, playing a lot of ultimate, but traditionally it hasn't bothered me much.

I have Premera Blue Cross in Seattle and I'm on the Heritage Plus 1 network. I believe I can self refer as long as the physician is within my network, so I'd like to save the time and cost of seeing my GP. Any suggestions as to who I should go to? I'm hoping to just get another injection and have that clear things up for awhile, but maybe there's a better solution.

Your GP will probably give you a referral by phone, without having to actually go in, and they should know who is in which insurance plan.

I've always had good luck using the Premera website to locate health care providers. You can put in your specific plan, location, specialty, preferred gender, etc.

There is a better solution. It's a series of exercises called "The McKenzie Method." Robin McKenzie's book, "Treat Your Own Back" is all you need.

In general, I've been extremely happy with the care I've gotten from the doctors at the Polyclinic. My GP is with them and I've seen several specialists as well; none have been less than excellent. I don't have a specific recommendation for a doctor for your problem, but I rate their practice very highly. They've all taken Premera.

You might also ask the Seattle Livejournal community; they're usually very helpful for exactly this sort of inquiry. Every so often the help comes with a heaping dose of snark, but it's help nonetheless.

I recently had my back pain cured (so long as I do my exercises) by a physical therapist at Therapeutic Associates. Poking around their website makes me think they take Premera.

My chiropractor has helped me and my husband immensely. She's skilled, a good listener, and a gifted healer. Might be worth having her take a look.
