What can I get some more freelance work?

What are good sites to bid on freelance design and web development work?

I have found a few on the web. Most of them seem sort of shady. I was hoping to get some recommendations. I am also open to any other recommendations about how I can go about finding some more freelance gigs.

Define shady... elance.com is pretty open and aboveboard, but they obviously can't vouch for their clients.

All I found all these years on elance, etc. are increasingly sweatshop-like rates. Not worth marketing yourself there unless you can compete with people coming from India or China.

I'll be happy to be proved wrong, mind you.

(_dario -- I had one super awesome elance client, although I do not do exactly what the OP does. But only one. All other potential clients were all "oh yah please provide me with a great set of wireframes and also actually I expect them to be PSD comps and also in HTML right dawg, but no I will totally pay you the rate you named but seriously where can I get an investor? o shit boss is coming gotta run." So I lucked out the one time, but yeah. Elance itself totally worked, though -- they didn't, like, steal my money or anything.)

I liked Rent-A-Coder's system and they definitely won't steal your money or anything, but definitely don't expect much above sweatshop rates. chesty_a_arthur's characterization of the typical interactions that go on there is pretty spot on. Your best bet for finding freelance work would actually be to set up a website with your portfolio and then approach clients individually - for example, by building a network of similar freelancers who might be able to refer work, being active on relevant industry blogs, and I'm sure you could find small businesses in your local community that need an online presence and wouldn't mind paying a small fee.

None - you are competing purely on price on sites like that.
