Why do my internet options work in IE 6 but not IE 8?

I currently use Internet Explorer. For work. I have to, as their little web site that I use for stuff does not work in Firefox. The program is also integrated into the program I use for work (I'm a medical transcriptionist). By the way, I had this same problem well before I installed the program for this job. So I do not think it is this program doing anything.

In IE 6 I can access "internet options" which I think is under the Tools menu. Then I can fiddle with cookies or the background color (the work program uses IE, as I said, so if I pick purple, I get to look at a purple screen all day. I have it green right now. :) when I wish.

I install IE 8 and I get an error that says "This operation has been
canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. " The only change made is installing IE 8.

I am using the Big Cheese account on this computer, and there is no
other username or login or whatever. I did not, obviously, knowingly
restrict myself from anything.

If I uninstall IE 8, and go back to IE 6, my internet options work again.

I have tried, each time, all the things that Google helps me find. I delete something in the registry where they say. I did not have Spybot Search & Destroy so could not fix whatever that was. There are a few other things to do that are suggested. None of these make my internet options to work while I have IE 8 installed.

Sooner or later work is going to require that I have the latest IE, and I'd like to sort this out before that happens.

Thanks for any suggestions.

When are you getting the "operation has been canceled" message? When you launch IE8? When you click on Tools -> internet Options? Or when you click on a link?

I suspect that some of the work programs are not yet compatible with IE8. I have this problem.

My company uses IE6 still. Way back when, I was able to work from home with no problems . Now that I've upgraded to IE8 at home, a myriad of things in the 'work programs' don't work. I can read work e-mail but not respond, for example.

When they finally get around to upgrading, its going to be a nightmare. Last week they made a minor upgrade of some kind and suddenly no-one at work could print from the main program in full scale. Everything was condensed and unreadable. That lasted for about a day before they got it straightened out.

Good luck.

I'm guessing your PC is a member of an Active Directory domain. Group Policy restrictions specific to IE8 (or IE7 and 8) must have been put in place on the domain by your IT department.

Response by poster: I get the error when I choose "internet options" from the tools menu. I don't think I got it with any links.

So far, upgrades with this program I am using for work have gone without any problems. :) I guess I am lucky!

Response by poster: I just checked, and most of the issues involving problems with my work program + IE 8 are resolved when you leave the zoom at 100%. Frankly, I did not even know the program had a zoom thing. So I don't think IE 8 is going to break my work program (the way I use it) if I manage to get it to work.

Response by poster: I don't have an IT department. I work from home, on my own computer. No one but me has ever used this computer.

Response by poster: I forgot to mention that I use Windows XP home edition.

This isn't really the answer, but this addon gives you a builtin IE inside firefox.
The only thing keeping me sane here.

Response by poster: PowerCat - I have been using that for at least 8 months now. It is great!
