What's alive in New York later this month?

The missus and me are going to be in New York (all right, not NY but Jersey City, on the Hudson, right across from NY) later this month. We have a full weekend of fun planned except for Thursday night the 27th. We'd like to hop across and seem some live entertainment but not necessarily Broadway touristy stuff. So, could someone recommend some music or comedy or other performance we could take in that we wouldn't know about if we didn't live there? Bonus points for recommending the best way (ferry? Path? taxi?) to get from Jersey City to New York and back later that night.)

Try to get tickets for Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson at the Public Theatre (downtown). It's a musical, but it's pretty much as far as you can get from traditional Broadway fare.

PATH is the best way back and forth, as long as you're staying close to a stop in JC.

PATH trains are your best bet, by far. NYC yellow cabs hate driving there.

There are ferries, ya know.

The Moth, storytelling. (Although they don't have a show that night.)
Upright Citizens Brigade, improv comedy.

You could look into tickets for a taping of something (Letterman, Daily Show, Colbert, etc.)

It's Broadway touristy stuff, but damn if Fela isn't worth it.

Response by poster: Just an update ... we popped over on the Path and went to the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. The writing staff of the Colbert Report was doing an improv show. We had to stand in the standby line but eventually got in. And even though I had to sit on the floor, they had beer and all was right with the world.
