Help us plan our first trip to big bear!

Our family and friend's family plan to go to big bear during this summer (mid June weekend). We both have 1 small kid each (3 & 4 yrs old). Our objective is to have a nice picnic together, relax, barbeque, enjoy jacuzzi. We want our kids to enjoy, run around, play, bike. We also want to take our kids on their first hiking expedition (one which they can tolerate) if possible. We are interested in renting a private home/cabin/cottage with minimum 2 bed/2 baths with full kitchen and hot tub/jacuzzi.

We have following questions -
1. Should we rent a cabin on top of the hill or near big bear lake area? What would you recommend and why? We particularly don't want to do any lake activities or mountain activities. But we do want our kids to enjoy, play a lot and spend a adventurous day close to nature.
2. Any specific locations, recommendations for cabin lodging would be appreciated.
3. Other tips for 2-3 days itinerary are also welcome.

Response by poster: We ended up renting a cabin. It was @600$ for 2 days. It was big enough with 2 families (6 people), complete with full kitchen, bbq and hot tub. It was very cozy and relaxing. jet ski and alpine slide was a lot of fun too.
