Did you, personally, come and pee on my rug?

Why are these rugs staining my floor, and how can I get rid of the stain?

The bathroom in my apartment has white patterned vinyl flooring. I use a couple of these JC Penney latex-backed rugs to make it cozier. I've used this brand & style of rug all throughout my childhood and my various apartments, and I've never, ever had a problem with them.

But in this apartment, there are yellow stains underneath the rugs! The stains are in the exact shape of the rugs and only under the rugs.

There are no windows in the room, but there is a newish ventilation fan that we use all the time, and I've never noticed moisture underneath the rugs. I launder the rugs monthly. The latex is not deteriorated in any way. I've scrubbed the floor with all kinds of things and nothing will remove the stains. I don't want to have to pay for this when we move out, unless we really did cause it.

The floor itself is in pretty crappy shape; nobody ever caulked around the toiled or along the edge of the tub, so the vinyl and the wood floor underneath have swelled and warped with time. There is a grayish mildew stain on the vinyl from the condensation on the toilet seeping into the floor (at least, that's what the plumber said).

So, what is causing these stains? Is this our fault or a defect in the flooring? How can I remove them without replacing the floor? Thanks, guys!

Best answer: Vinyl flooring doesn't play well with latex-backed rugs. I'm not sure if the quality of the vinyl makes a difference - like you, I never had an issue with it until one specific place.

Here's an eHow with a suggestions for removing this yellowing. I didn't try in my old place. The author suggests a baking soda paste. I don't have a lot of confidence this method will work, honestly.

Don't put the rugs down on wet floors. Not sure of the science but it seems to make the problem much, much worse. Never had any luck removing it either. Sorry I can't be more help.
