The Art Car Parade starts rolling down Allen Parkway on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and goes until around 3:00 p.m. The easiest way to enjoy the parade is to bike there, if possible. If that's not possible, you can park in adjacent neighborhoods north and south of Allen Parkway (little streets south of Washington and north of Allen Parkway or the little streets just south of Allen Parkway in kind of the north Montrose area toward downtown). The best viewing for the parade itself is between Montrose and Bagby on Allen Parkway. I haven't done the preview before, but you can hit Montrose and Taft at 9 a.m. for that. Here's a little blurb on what else is going on for Art Car weekend. posted by *s at 3:15 PM on May 6, 2010
Yes, absolutely bike there. posted by halogen at 5:36 PM on May 6, 2010
Pretty much what *s said. If you camp out in the median of Allen Parkway, you get to see the cars coming and going, which is cool. Means that you get two shots at that perfect picture.
Last year we took the train downtown from the med center and walked over - probably took us 15-20 minutes. posted by chrisamiller at 7:15 PM on May 6, 2010
Be prepared for it to be far hotter than you expect it to be. I don't know why - maybe it's all the asphalt - but it always seems to be much hotter there than it is while you're on your way to the parade. posted by MexicanYenta at 8:46 AM on May 7, 2010
