How do you make the DVI output default on a video card?

With an NVidia video card, how do you make the DVI output "default" and the VGA output secondary?

I have a PC running Windows 7 Home and a NVidia Geforce 8400 GS video card with 2 outputs, a DVI and a VGA. If I boot it with both outputs plugged in to 2 monitors, only the VGA output works (displaying startup screen) and the DVI acts like it has no signal. However, if I boot with just the DVI output plugged into a monitor, then it will display the startup screen, and I can plug in the VGA after Windows has started and both will work fine in dual-monitor mode.

Obviously this is tedious to do every time I start the computer! How do I change the "order" or precedence of the DVI over VGA so that it will display the startup screen every time? I couldn't find anything about this in the NVidia control panel.

Thanks!

Have you tried making the DVI monitor the "use this device as primary monitor" in the Windows display properties?

Response by poster: Yes, but no dice. I can get into Windows, but without the DVI signal.

The strange thing is that this worked fine in Vista, and still does when I switch the card back. It's something to do with Windows 7. Maybe a driver problem?
