Who are your role models? How do you fill in "What would ____ do?"

When I was growing up the question of role models was quite prevalent, but it seems to have become a bit of a punchline (is society getting more cynical or am I?) now. Or it gets used prescriptively (as it was in school), which is not what I'm looking for. I realize I haven’t read many compelling things about credible "role models" – this is not to say that people aren’t so, just that it’s hard to know anything true given the biases and commerce-related limitations of most media.

Beyond that, everything gets broken down in niches and the question becomes much more specialized/personalized. Maybe this idea of 'model' human beings doesn’t even hold much shared value anymore, but I’m sure it’s not entirely irrelevant (yet).

So I want to know more about other people's role models – people that inspire you, people that you’ve learned a fair bit about and found to be principled, passionate, prescient, or whatever else you value, people that you admire not just for specific talents or actions, but wholly (from what you know), as people – and try to learn from / emulate.

Reasons would be good too!

Response by poster: I'll go first? I'm assuming that most of our role models are living people – mine are, because they live in (roughly) my world, and also ‘cause I’m lazy and stuck in my personal little information/education sandbox.

On a day-to-day basis, the following are people I admire and learn from:

Jon Stewart: So sane, so angry, so funny.
Michel Foucault: Socratic, activist, rooted in history.
Bill Watterson: He made Calvin and Hobbes, fought for better space for comics, won, fought against merchandising, won, and then went off into the woods (Ohio) to paint.
