It's a mad world...

What movies have awesome songs that play during the end of the movie?

I don't mean during the credits necessarily, but as the actual movie part is ending.

For example, I think when "Mad World" plays during the last bit of Donnie Darko it's just about perfect. "Where Is My Mind?" at the end of Fight Club is really great as well.

I'm sure there are more examples of this out there. I guess we should keep it spoiler free in case people haven't seen the movies that are mentioned. Okay, go!

I have a perhaps-irrational fondness for the Alanis Morissette song "Still" that plays over the credits of Dogma. I worked in a theater when it came out, and I would sweep out the Dogma theater first so I could hear this song.

City of Dreams by Talking Heads, which plays over the final shot and credits of David Byrne's strange film True Stories. The film itself is something of an acquired taste, which is another way of saying that it's (whisper it) a bit boring, but the final shot, as a young girl dances in an empty road, and the camera pulls back seemingly endlessly over a starkly beautiful landscape as the song continues, is really pretty special. Now if only someone would put it on Youtube.

Larry Clark's 1995 film Kids uses Sebadoh's 'Spoiled' for the ending, and I always felt like it was a perfectly subtle choice.

Also, shortly before the movie ends there's a montage of NYC street scenes that uses an ambient sample track by Folk Implosion, which is a side-project of Sebadoh's Lou Barlow.

Oh, and of course—Aimee Mann's "Save Me," from Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia. The final scene is a single long tracking shot on one character's face. Anderson achieves a beautiful sync between the music and the photography; it's just a beautiful example of this.

"While the Earth Sleeps," Peter Gabriel and Deep Forest, end of Strange Days.

Also, the consistent use of Rage Against the Machine over the credits in the first two Matrix movies? Perfect. Not that "Navras" isn't a good song, but they really lost something in the sense of continuity there by not having a third RATM song for Revolutions. (They lost something by having Revolutions at all, mind, but that's not your question.)

I got to see a preview of The Royal Tenenbaums in which the final scene had the Beach Boys' version of "Sloop John B," which I had only recently discovered at the time, and which I continue to love love love, so I was pretty excited about it. Alas, it didn't make the final cut. According to the Wikipedia, "Sloop John B" was Wes Anderson's second choice after a demo version of "I'm Looking Through You," but he couldn't get the rights to either one, so he settled on "Everyone" by Van Morrison. Interesting how different the three are.

I always loved the music they used in Fandango (a movie practically no one knows about, because it was gone from theaters in a cough and a spit). The last scenes, going into the credits, go from two Pat Metheny songs into Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home" (which is sadlly missing from this clip, boo).

(Quick plot summary: It's 1971, and a bunch of college graduates from the University of Texas who were all roommates are giving themselves one last weekend fling before they go off their own ways - one to report for ROTC duty, one to his new job, one over the border to Mexico to dodge the draft, etc. The wedding scene you're seeing was the result of the group of them basically conning an entire town into throwing a wedding for them.)

I've always assumed that it's by Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov, the soundtrack composer - since I've never heard otherwise - but whoever wrote it, I've always been absolutely floored by the music on the last nine minutes of the great Andrei Rublev, during which Rublev's icons are shown. Well, the original end theme of Empire Strikes Back is freakin' awesome. It's starts around when Lando is taking off wearing Hans's clothes, and then eventually they pan out of the observation window into the end credits theme. Such great end music.

That, of course, is not to minimize the original 1983 closing song to Return of the Jedi. None of that fancy all-over-the-galaxy celebration music: it was all about the Ewok choir's festive "Yub Nub."
