What kind of tree is this spiky/thorny fella in my front yard? (Santa Monica, CA)

Best answer: It is either a Ceiba chodatii or Ceiba speciosa, commonly known as Floss Silk Trees. You'll be able to tell the difference between the two when they bloom.

Response by poster: Thanks all. I thought it might be a floss silk, but the thorns didn't seem prominent/colorful enough. I've only lived here since February, though, so we'll see what happens in the coming months...

(And yes, it is an awesome tree. Right next to it is another tree that is perfectly smooth, like a metal lightpost. The two make quite a contrast.)
