Terrifying podcasts, please...

Are there any horror podcasts that you recommend?? I found a few suggestions in the archives, but would really like some specific recommendations.

Background: In a few weeks, I'm taking a long roadtrip with my SO, and several nights will be spent camping. I'm looking for podcasts/recordings that will scare us silly and make us afraid to fall asleep. Podcasts that will have us jumping at every sound outside the tent.

I've had some luck finding stories read aloud (like Poe), but am having much less luck finding frightening theater, other than old radio shows. I'm willing to try out both.

So can MeFites recommend any specific examples of horror podcasts they've heard that have frightened them? Any specific episodes?

Thanks!!

Pseudopod is the only strict horror podcast I know of. Variant Frequencies has some horror in there but I can't point to specific episodes. My favorite pseudopod episodes are hard to pick but there was one called "Crab Apple" somewhere around 52 that I remember, and another one before that about the traditional Jewish golem myth that was pretty great.

J.C. Hutchin's Seventh Son was a thriller, not horror, but after it was done he did a series of podcasts called 7th Son: Obsidian by other authors based in that universe. One of them was excellent horror but so help me I can't find an episode index anywhere.

MeMail if you want details. I have all this info at home but won't be able to get to it till tomorrow.

19 Nocturne Boulevard isn't entirely horror, but there is a fair amount of it. I liked their adaption of HPL's "The Temple," and "Chillin'," an update of "Cool Air" wasn't exactly horror but was nicely done.

Seconding Pseudopod as the go-to horror podcast.

There's a bunch of horror podcasts listed in iTunes. Darker Projects is one I think is both modern and radioplay oriented, but I'm going off of memories of references--I've never listened myself.

StarShipSofa runs horror on occasion (they're more SF oriented as a rule) but you must check out Larry Santoro's "Little Girl Down the Way" in their Aural Delights #46. It's an author-read story, but it has a lot of emotion in both it and the telling. (I just realized one of my little flash bits ran as in that same podcast. Skip that and go directly to 0:30)

Response by poster: Trip over - thanks to all! I downloaded some Pseudopod and we listened to them by the campfire. They were good stories (and well read), but not quite what I was hoping for. I wanted something closer to scary campfire tales, rather than dystopian futures or zombie stories. Still, Pseudopod is a great find, and I appreciate the help! I've added them to my commute listening.

I'll check out the others now that we're back!

PS- I also downloaded some Poe readings, including a bizarre version of The Raven read by Christopher Walken, made a little ridiculous by background wind and guitar (?!) noises!
