Anything cool happening in New Orleans next weekend (April 16th-20th)?

I'm off to New Orleans next weekend! Woohoo!

I know theres been a couple general "What's fun in New Orleans?" questions lately, but can anyone suggest cool events that are happening that weekend in particular? Festivals, concerts, parades, art openings, etc.

Check out noladiy.org for indie, do-it-yourself-y type things. A quick glance shows that the Alternative Media Expo is happening Saturday (which has been awesome fun in the past, but I'm unfortunately going to miss it this year).

Complete Info:
The Alternative Media Expo
Saturday, April 17. Contemporary Arts Center. 12PM. $5. Booking
Various exhibitors with comics, 'zines, crafts and much more.

You get the added benefit of going to the Contemporary Art Center after and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art right across the street if you wish.

bestofneworleans.com is the Gambit's site and it keeps pretty up-to-date information on what's going on around the city. No matter what you're looking for, I'm sure you'll find something awesome to do.

I was just in NOLA last weekend and one of the things I figured out way too late in the game was to pick up the local magazine (can't think of the name) that listed weekly events and goings ons, things that I didn't see online.

For instance, had I picked one up on the first day I arrived, I would have been able to find out which local bands were playing that weekend and planned accordingly.

Instead, I just happened to ask our waiter at dinner Sunday at 6 pm about zydeco bands which might be playing around town, and he plucked this magazine out from behind the bar. I found out that a bar nearby was featuring zydeco - and they started playing an hour earlier.

So, in short - when you roll into town, ask at your hotel or at a restaurant if they have a copy of this magazine lying around, and you'll hit some paydirt.

The magazine to which HeyAllie is referring is most likely The Gambit, which has their website at bestofneworleans.com which two other people have already linked up.

As for events, I don't have anything on my calendar other than my friends' wedding, which is probably on that weekend because it's the empty weekend between French Quarter Fest and Jazzfest. So ... yeah, nothing huge going on, but one thousand little things.

According to noladiy.org, the Red Elvises are in town on the 19th. They are so much fun live!

Speaking of fun live, The Bingo Show is playing on the 16th. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they are the best/most fun/fanfuckingtastic band in New Orleans. I don't really know how to explain it...music, cabaret, theatre, and bingo. There is nothing like it.
