Where shall we stay in Madrid?

My husband and I are going on vacation in May, and need hotel recommendations for Madrid. We will be there for a couple of days at the start of our trip, and a couple more days at the end. (The middle part is tooling around Morocco in a car and lazing at a resort in Gran Canaria, so wouldn't mind tips for those spots either.) We are looking for something comfortable and reasonably priced and close enough to transport that we don't have to rent a car.
Your ideas about things not to miss in Madrid would be wonderful as well. We are especially partial to art, parks and good food.
I was a good Mefi and did look at this thread and the others listed in it, but didn't spot anything recent on Madrid hotels.

We stayed at the H10 Madrid Center a few years ago. It was clean, affordable, and centrally located.

Here are some budget to moderately priced options:
We stayed at a triple in the Petit Palace Londres in Madrid because we got a good deal and triples weren't available everyplace. It was a great location right near the Plaza Mayor and a fine accommodation - we were only in the city for 2 days and were able to walk everywhere. The hotel was right in the thick of things.
Here are some other places we looked at but that were booked:
Hotel Plaza Mayor (#23 of 463 Trip Advisor)
Mate Mario (#13 of 463 on Trip Advisor)
And Hostal Valencia Madrid (the Petit Palace is in the same neighborhood)
Hotel Miau
Have fun, your trip sounds great!

The last time I went to Madrid, I booked an apartment via http://www.goletworld.com. The place we found was not terribly expensive, cozy, in a quiet area of town, and very close to the trains. I am used to staying in hotels when I travel, and being in a lovely apartment was so much more fun, and relaxing.

Response by poster: Thanks all! Great suggestions here. We ended up booking at Hotel Carlton, which we would not have located but for this thread. Thanks for the good wishes, madamjujujiva!
