Good eats in Modesto/Merced, California area?

I pass through these fine valley towns driving from the coast to the mountains and back a few times a year and I've not had much luck finding good value eateries. I'm looking for preferably non-chain, and nothing particularly fancy, just fresh and good. Mexican is fine. TIA.

When I lived in Modesto I used to go to Mariscos for a quality cheap lunch.

I recommend the torta.

I apologize for the back-to-back posts. I almost forgot the best sandwich shop I've encountered anywhere.

Scott's Sub Co

The daily specials are uniformly fantastic, they have been known to cook up the meat in the Volkswagen Beetle converted into a grill and parked outside. Try to avoid the lunch rush, or if this is not possible, call ahead.

Restaurants in Merced are somewhat problematic because no one who lives there can afford to eat out (due to the highest unemployment in the state, at well over 20%), so a lot of have closed.

A notable exception is La Nita Mexican Cafe at 18th and T. I ate there as a kid, and it's still there, still great, old-school Mexican fare.

Also a great bet is the Branding Iron at 16th and M. They have a great gazpacho, and has also been there for years, off and on.

Sir James on Motel way in the south part of town is a steak house of some repute.

For Chinese, it's the Hong Kong at Yosemite and G. All I can say is that it's Chinese Merced-style, or maybe valley-style. I love their chow mein - nothing like it in the SF Bay Area or LA, that I've been able to find, anyway.

The best restaurant in Merced . . . and in fact, the best Indian restaurant I have eaten at EVER is Taste of Little India.

Tequila Café in Winton (10 miles or so from Merced) is super-tasty.
Seconding the Branding Iron.
