Good NYC steakhouse (that's not Gallagher's)

Looking to go to a good NYC steakhouse tonight that's not Gallagher's (bad experience there last year). Any great recommendations/places you love? We're a party of 5 and near MSG but willing to go within a reasonable distance.

The only correct answer to this is Peter Luger's just over the bridge in Williamsburg. If you're willing to eat at a weird time, you might (big might) be able to get a table.

Peter Luger is pretty decent.

Peter Luger may be our national monument to meat. I third it.

i too love peter luger, but considering that it's a) peter luger and b) saturday night, you'll probably not be able to make a reservation for a party your size given such short notice.

Peter Luger, by a mile. They will sometimes have last-minute availability at early times (5:00-ish) or late ones (11:00-ish), but it will be tough to get something this weekend.

I haven't been, but Ben and Jack's Steakhouse is apparently a Luger clone (owned by former waiters from that hallowed hall) with two locations in Manhattan and a bad website which plays silly music:

http://www.benandjackssteakhouse.com/

Craft Steak (10th Ave. at 15th) is too expensive, but is quite good and has far more variety in cuts and types of beef than the (perfect) Luger porterhouse.

Do not under any circumstance go to Homestead.

Near MSG? You want Keens Steakhouse.

Chowhound had a lively discussion on this topic. Luger's was far from unanimous.

Oh its too bad I didn't see this sooner. There are so many decent steak houses in NYC, problem with all of them would have been the same regarding getting in at a good time. My favorite is Quality Meats, but there is also Bobby Vans, Jordan's, Sparks, Smith and Wollensky, Del Friscos, and the list goes on. Midtown business men love steak houses, so I've been dragged to a few too many. They are all similarly priced and the wine lists obnoxious (but fabulous if you are on an expense account!).

Here's the URL: http://www.keens.com/

Duh, today is the 13th. lol.

Does it have to be a traditional steak house? There are some really excellent Argentinian steak houses in NYC you might want to consider.

We were at Keen's last night, and it was delicious. If you can get into Smith & Wollensky, though, do that!

Definitely Ben and Jack's -- have the insane bacon, too.

Strip House was upgraded to two stars this week by The New York Times, but I have not eaten there.

Strip House is great. Excellent meat, refined touches to their sides.

Peter Luger's porterhouse is the single best piece of meat I've had in NYC, possibly anywhere. Though it's very out of the way for you (a car will be required, both ways), and weekend service can be a bit... trying.

The whole point of Keen's is to be a good steakhouse near MSG. With neither the Rangers or Knicks at home tonight you should have no problem.

It's a bit downtown from MSG, necessitating a short cab ride to Greenwich Village, but 3 days ago, the NYT gave Strip House 2 stars. From the review, I gather that the meat, and basic sides were even better than that rating.

Personally, I'd take the cab ride, and the chance.

Strip House is great.

Ben Benson's isn't too far away from you (52nd St.).

Nthing Peter Luger being awesome, though nowhere near MSG. Benjamin Steakhouse is owned by former PL staff and is quite tasty - and they carry the famous schlag...mmmm......

Also worth checking out: Sparks, Capital Grille, Bobby Vans, The Palm.

Peter Luger, clearly.

CraftSteak was awesome, but they're no more; Tom Colicchio runs a different restaurant there now.

Keens. One of the oldest restaurants in NY, a beautiful space, great steak, and an excellent Scotch list.

A few people mentioned it in longer lists, but I'd like to highlight Sparks: the best I've had. Wow.
