Where are the hip bars & eating establishments in Baltimore among the college-aged and 20somethings? Looking more for casual than club and more for rad diner than Thomas Keller.

I'm a big fan of the Mt. Royal Tavern which doesn't have food but is cheap and full of color.

Best answer: These are going to be more 20-something than college-age, but...Brewer's Art. Hon Bar. Club Charles. Golden West. Rocket to Venus. Ottobar. Talking Head.

We're having a meetup at the Ottobar soon and I'm sure you could gets lots of suggestions from the Mefi and non-Mefi folks there as well.

Best answer: The Brewer's Art

Set in a grand Mt. Vernon townhouse, The
Brewer's Art offers many temptations for
your palate. Chef Dave Newman's seasonally changing menus feature meats,
fish, seafood, pasta, and vegetarian offerings.
Dinner is served daily between 5:30pm -
9:00pm (later on Thursdays, Fridays and
Saturdays) and light fare is available from
4:00pm - 10:00pm. Our creative pastry chef
prepares our homemade desserts.

In addition to brewing our fine beers on the
premises, we offer a carefully picked selection
of beers and fine wines from around the world,
and one of Baltimore's best selections of
scotches and spirits.

The Helmand

The Helmand Restaurant is named after Afghanistan's longest and most important river (and also the owners' first-born son!) It is one of several restaurants nationally that are owned and operated by members of one of Afghanistan's most famous and prominent families. In the last decade, these restaurants helped introduce and popularize Afghan cuisine to America.
Experience the cuisine the Zagat Survey says, "beckons with "exotic" dishes that consistently hit the mark. You must try the kaddo. It'll forever change how you think about pumpkins. And the chopan, charcoaled rack of lamb at its absolute zenith -- graciously served by an attentive staff in an elegant room; to boot. It's an incredible value."

Although I am a little confused by your use of 'The Wire' as a tag. If you can elaborate on what you're looking for, we might be able to be of more help.

Depends on what you want. Are you looking for more bohemian/hipster places or more yuppie?

Best answer: I enjoy The Pickled Parrot in Canton. It's not overly crowded on the weekends, and it's a nice, friendly pub atmosphere.

Max's in Fells has a great beer selection, reasonable prices, and really comfortable wing chairs (upstairs at any rate). They're my mainstay for a starting point every Halloween. Site here

Nacho Mama's in Canton has some of the best quesadillas I've ever eaten, plus wonderful Margarhitas.

Sly Fox in Locust Pt. is pretty terrific.

The beauty of Baltimore is that ages mingle: everyone can be a hipster. That being said, no one mentioned SoBo cafe.

Best answer: Ale Mary's is a nice neighborhood place in Fell's Point with a pretty diverse crowd.

Also, DTTV said "rad diner" and nobody mentioned Paper Moon?

Liam's will be re-opening in the old North Avenue Market soon. Should be awesome.

Best answer: I'll put a vote in for Bad Decisions which is across the street from Ale Mary's and has very affordable custom drinks with fresh ingredients.

It's not hip, but one of my favorite places in Baltimore is Birds of a Feather in Fells Point. Interesting little scotch bar. Not much else, but the proprietor is a riot.

Totally seconding Paper Moon. My hipster friend in Hamden loves it.

Ugh. Can I vote against Paper Moon? It's overpriced and the service and food suck. If you want kitsch, go to Cafe Hon.

Response by poster: Thanks for the great answers, guys! "The Wire" tag was just me adding a stupid tag.

Best answer: Paper Moon is fun mostly due to the decor, but if you're looking for good service and food (and booze) it's not the place for you. Cafe Hon is where my parents go for brunch when they come visit, if that makes a difference.

You really can't go wrong with Brewer's upstairs or downstairs, although downstairs gets crowded on Thurs-Sat weekends. Upstairs is the dining room and is somewhat expensive, downstairs is pub food.

The Owl Bar is a cool place, food can be a little uneven, happy hour is solid.

Mamas on the Half Shell in Canton is one of my favorite seafood places.

The Windup Space is a couple blocks north of Station North, where the Charles Theater is. Good shows, decent beer selection.

Joe Squared has fantastic pizza, lots of live shows, but tends to get absolutely packed on weekend nights.

Dionysus has good food, decent crowd. Lots of art students and bike messengers last time I went.

For just drinking you can't beat Mount Royal Tavern or Dougherty's.

Also, all the bars/restaurants in Hampden along 36th Street are pretty decent. We go to Golden West, Holy Frijoles and Rocket to Venus fairly regularly. All have good food and a good bar scene. Frazier's is good for drinking and playing pool. The Hon Bar is pretty meh. I'd avoid Zissimo's unless you want to get into a fistfight.
