Why won't my Shift+Ctrl keys work together?

I've just got an Acer TravelMate 5520 running Windows XP from work. It exhibits some strange behaviour when using the shift and control keys simultaneously.
Trying to select words at a time doesn't work, the selection box will "stick"; sometimes each subsequent arrow press selects a word and sometimes it doesn't. When using Shift+Ctrl+> to increase font size in Office applications that "sticks" and "jumps" as well. Using shift and ctrl with other keys works fine, the problem only appears when they're used together.
Any ideas? I've tried the Accessibility options - sticky keys etc.
