Why is fleet air reconnaissance referred to as VQ?

I have a friend in the U.S. Navy who mentioned something called VQ. I asked him what this stood for, and he said it was "fleet air reconnaissance." But neither of us are sure where the VQ bit came from. Can anyone explain this? Is it an acronym of some kind? How did that name (VQ) come about?
