How to remove the odor of cat urine odor and stain remover?

My cat thinks my messenger bag is a great item to piss on. I guess she likes the texture. Fine. Whatever. Luckily I find this pretty shortly after the event. I take the bag and soak it or 20 minutes in a 50/50 mixture of Simple Green Cat Pet Stain and Odor remover, as directed by the bottle. I then toss it in the washer. I wash it twice. Hooray! The smell of cat piss is now out of my bag.

However something almost as sinister has taken its place. It's the smell of the Simple Green. That smell is a combination of some fragrance and the disinfectant smell of a freshly cleaned hospital ward. Certainly that scent is better than the scent of cat urine. However, it's not what I imagine as "wonderful" as the Simple Green website claims. I'm not altogether keen on carrying that smell around with me.

Now, how do I no get rid of that?

Best answer: I've had luck with soaking stanky items in water + OxiClean.

I feel your pain. The BASTARDS who add perfume to pet urine removal products apparently have never had an animal PEE IN THE SAME PLACE REPEATEDLY.

And, labwench has the ultimate solution: Nature's Miracle doesn't contain perfumes!

Response by poster: Oh, maybe this is relevent: since the bag is mostly nylon I followed the manufacturer's instructions and drip dried the bag instead of puting it in the dryer. This also gave me false hope the Simple Green scent would not take to the bag as it did.

@labwench: I've used Nautre's Miracle to remove the odor of cat urine before, do you think it will also remove the odor from a competing cat uring odor remover?

Best answer: I second OxiClean or try baking soda in the wash.

I feel your pain. Siamese is a leather chair, rug, dirty laundry pisser.

The question seems to be about removing the smell of "Simple Green" rather than how to remove the smell of cat odor. I don't know "Simple Green" but as people are weighing in with their favorite cat odor remover I'll put in a bid for my favorite "Wee Cleaner" which I've had better results with than with Nature's Miracle and doesn't even include fragrance.

after the Nature's Miracle, use a powdered laundry detergent to wash with rather than a liquid - the powdered ones are much more soluble in water and so they rinse out cleaner (and presumably rinse out everything else cleaner too).

Wait, what?

The only thing that has ever worked for us (former owners of a cat who went in the same place for way too long before we caught on to it)...

8 oz. (1 cup) hydrogen peroxide
1 tsp. baking soda
1 small drops liquid dishwashing soap (Dawn, Palmolive, etc.)

Mix gently until baking soda dissolves. If there is "fresh" waste still there, dab it up with a towel. Then soak the entire area with the mixture. Let it sit for a day, dab up any remaining liquid with a towel. Vacuum if needed after area is dry.

Also, its worth an investment in Boundary. My cats HATE it. Anything that's even near something I spray with Boundary is safe for at least a month.

Just be careful not to spray the litter boxes, as the cats will refuse to use them if you do!

Boundary did not work AT ALL for my cats, so YMMV. Definitely Nature's Miracle and Felliway (to keep cat from wanting to pee on other stuff to begin with).

As far as getting rid of the Simple Green odor, I would try Febreze fabric refresher.

Simple Green is kind of stanky, yes, but it's also very biodegradable. If possible, leave your bag out in the sunshine and fresh air for a day or so and see if that makes a difference. It usually does for me for the things I've had to douse with Simple Green. I'd also suggest baking soda and lemon juice if you're trying to mask and lingering scent; in the kitchen that always clears that weird, gingery simple green smell off the countertops.

I've found that first soaking the offended item in water & Resolve Pet Stain Carpet Cleaner, rinsing with water, towel drying, and then using Nature's Miracle works the best. And, I've used that method many times on nylon suitcases, gym bags, i.e. anything that indicates to my cat that I am LEAVING and it leaves them clean and odor free. And, yes - air drying is the key.
