Snazzy cross-body bag as gift for wife who sometimes needs to use crutches?

She wants to avoid utilitarian and matronly, wants a compact feminine bag and I have about $100 to spend.

Response by poster: She informs me that she wants a "confection".

Jack Spade bags are extremely well made, well designed and nice to own. This one is neither matronly nor overly utilitarian and comes in various confectionery colors - purple, green and orange.

Plus, it's on sale from $175 to $85 and so comes under your budget.

I'm not sure what qualifies as a confection, or what materials she favors (leather, microfiber, cotton?), but here are crossbody bags on Zappos, sorted by price.

I'm drawn to the Fossil bags myself - this one is certainly snazzy - but I tend to favor utilitarian.

I'm not a fan of their aesthetic in general, but this is one area where Coach really shines. Their bags are expensive new, but can be found high quality used/vintage on eBay for well under $100. I have the Peyton leather cross body bag and a vintage one that looks like this one, and they're both great, high quality, stylish, etc.

second oinopaponton but is there any chance you could show your wife the bag before buying it? because gift + budget + gotta get it right means less margin for error than if you had boatloads of disposable cash. would it spoil the surprise too much to let her help choose?

Etsy has lots, and many are inexpensive:
Zinnia
Red Capezio
Red vintage (I love this one)
Jupiter
Cream vintage
Green swirlies
This flowery one's a camera bag, but so pretty!
Lots of bright patterns here

I have a custom made bag from Sugar Lust on etsy. She was awesome about accommodating my requests (I mostly just changed the size), the bag looks amazing and gets me compliments from strangers fairly regularly, it's made from soft slightly stretchy vinyl so it very comfortable to wear, and I've been using it almost daily for well over a year and it looks just like the day it arrived (which was very fast btw, despite my living on the other side of the world). If you like the aesthetic but not anything currently on sale look through her sold items to get more ideas and don't be afraid to ask for a custom job. She can put in more pockets and stuff too if necessary.

Queen Bee bags are great. This one's near your price range and sounds like it can convert from shoulder bag to cross body so might be a good one-bag solution.

If this $55 Rasperry Rosette purse isn't a confection, I don't know what is.

Here are my suggestions (all real leather):
Donald Pliner
Cole Haan
Cole Haan #2
B. Makowsky
The Sak
Junior Drake
Sophia Visconti
Perlina (I love this one)
Steve Madden

And this Furla is $133 but I think it's gorgeous and a fantastic deal (Furla is very nice). It comes with a shoulder strap that isn't pictured, and is compact and feminine and the kind of bag I'd be excited to receive.

Here's a search on the Fossil site that's narrowed down to crossbody bags between $75-99.

Lots of fun choices.

Just so you are aware and get what you pay for, there are a great many pirated "Coach" bags out there. Coach offers repair of their bags for the life of the product, but obviously this would not apply to pirated versions.

You can also search on endless.com for "crossbody bag" and then sort by price. One person's "feminine" bag is another person's "fugly" bag, so have a look at what's in her closet already for clues, maybe?
