How to get out of educ or a to a better-funded state?

(Education filter) HELP! I am a middle school principal (have my Masters and Admin certificate) in a state (AZ) that is not funding education. Although I like my job, I'd be open to other options. Two questions: Have YOU successfully transfered OUT of education and into another field...if so...what? 2) I'm open to moving...what states are GREAT to work for if I want to remain a Principal?

well, if you want to take some serious chances, I'd consider moving to DC and become a shield-bearer for Michelle Rhee (DC Schools Chancellor). If you get in, you'll probably make a lot of money, work yourself to death and have no job security, since she wants to abolish the union and institute merit pay everywhere. read up on her if you're interested - she's a Teach For America alum and (some say) crazed revolutionary. worth a thought.

Overseas in the international school circuit:

You'll save money, won't have to deal with the testing mentality, see the world and work at some great schools.

I have known a few principals who have leveraged their visibility into real estate. Not that it's the right time, or the right move for you, but as a middle school principal, you probably have a lot of visibility and credibility in your community. Or should. . .it's a killer hard job you have!

Your use of caps reminds me of emails I get from extroverts. ;-) Are you an extrovert? Maybe real estate would work, but whatever it is, you might get involved in Rotary or similar organizations. A lot of helpful chatter about careers and local opportunities goes on at that sort of place.

I'd also recommend working through What Color is Your Parachute, and doing the "informational interview" thing once you identify a few possibilities. That has saved me from several awful careers. :-)
