Help me identify 2 restaurants in NYC
February 17, 2010 8:52 AM

Two part question. 1. In '08 I ate at a restaurant in Manhattan, and I can't remember the name. It was on top of a building, there was a garden/atrium/bar outside the dining room. I remember seeing big king-like chars at each table. The menu listed a fantastic mac 'n cheese. Any ideas? 2. A friend told me about a great restaurant in Chinatown that has incredible steamed buns of all sorts. Does anyone know the name?

The dumpling place in Chinatown is probably Joe's.

The dumpling place in Chinatown is probably Joe's.

Buns are not dumplings. Photos:
Steamed pork bun
Lily pad wrap style steamed bun
Soup dumpling

Joe's Shanghai specializes in soup dumplings aka xiao long bao which are different from steamed buns. Steamed buns are more bread-like.

What kind of steamed bun you're talking about makes a difference, though. Like a pork bun where the meat is entirely enclosed, like at Mei Lai Wah? Or a lily pad wrap (he yeh bao) style bun like Bao Haus/Momofuku/Corner 28 similar to West Coast style Peking duck?

Most places don't have a huge variety of steamed buns, so I'm wondering if you're looking for Golden Steamer?

Ok. Joe's is overrated anyway.

I would guess Momofuku for the buns. Can't help with the restaurant...

Momofuku has several branches, none of which are in Chinatown, though, or offer a large variety of buns.

Momofuku Noodle Bar offers steamed pork, chicken, and mushroom buns. Momofuku Milk Bar offers steamed pork buns, as well as a pork and egg bun before 5pm IIRC. Momofuku Ssam Bar only offers steamed pork buns. Momofuku Ko and Ma Peche do not offer steamed buns.

All Momofukus but Ma Peche are located in the East Village. Ma Peche is located in Midtown.

For part one, sounds like the Hudson Cafeteria -- now closed according to the hotel website.
