I have a DVD that I want to edit using a tool like Windows Movie Maker or Adobe Premiere. How do I somehow get an editable file from the files on the DVD (vob, ifo, etc.)? I'm looking to retain as much quality as possible, so I assume this means I need an MPEG2 file? I've looked all over dvdrhelp and doom9, and if this is covered, it's covered using words I don't understand. In order of priority: Quality of final product/ease of use/price. Thanks!

smartripper will take a dvd and turn into an mpeg2. Easy to use.

I have used a combination of DVD Shrink and DVD2AVI in the past, but it looks like Mayor Curley's solution is more promising than that.

muckster, that's not a bad combo except that I somtimes have a hard time getting dvd compliant mpeg2s out of DVD2ETC. But it definitely would output something watchable.

Thanks a lot, Curley. I know you're pretty up on this stuff.

I assume I can just use Nero to burn the resulting MPEG2 files back onto a DVD?

No, you're going to need a DVD authoring program for that.

This is the free solution, but there are better tools out there. I suggest setting sail to plunder the Ulead Main.
