Camera availability in Japan

I wanted to get a new camera before my snowboarding trip to Japan later this month, but the model that I want, the Sony DSC-HX5V/B, isn't available until mid-march. But I've got a 1 night stopover in Tokyo, electronics wonderland! How can I find out if it will have been already released there so I can get it on the way?

I can't answer your question about timing of release in Japan (though DPR seems to be the standard for digi cam news), but can I ask why this particular camera?

I haven't seen it reviewed but it has a pretty small sensor - 1/2.4". The Canon S90 has less zoom but bigger sensor - 1/1.7" - which aotbe makes for better pics and has gotten great reviews.

I understand electronics are actually quite expensive in Tokyo, so you may want to check prices beforehand.

It looks like it exists but is pretty pricey: Here is a list of stores selling it. Kakaku is a price aggregator, but it's in Japanese, so I'm not sure how useful it will be for you. The cheapest price looks to be about $425 with the current exchange price, and the big electronics stores won't get you that price, although you should be able to get some discount for being a foreigner (you'll be exempt from the consumption tax). You will probably also have to buy a memory card and a case which will also cost money on top of that.

perhaps you could visit the sony consumer website for jpn? you'll find country specific ,current market release models there.

Not to dissuade you, but the Canon S90 is just an amazing camera. We've had one for a couple of months and 9/10 times take it with us over our larger DSLR.

Um, the site you linked to has it in stock, with an estimated ship date of tomorrow if you ordered it today. You're leaving 'later this month', but expedited shipping isn't a huge expense - can't you just order it from sony?

Or am I missing something?
