SatNav map updates on the cheap?

I've been asked to help someone choose a SatNav.

The hidden cost seems to be in the map updates which cost almost as much as a new device. One forum mentions that you can buy these updates on DVD, and that the price for the updates drops once a new map is released, but I can't find much information on this anywhere. The TomTom website talks a lot about TomTom Home which downloads the map updates directly from TomTom - meaning no cut price maps.

What is the cheapest way to do map updates on these things? (Device will probably be a large screen Tomtom XXL IQ Routes Europe)

Best answer: Some Garmin models can use OpenStreetMap data, which is free.
