What songs do you listen to on repeat--and then once more?
I am listening my way through my music library, and this question about books made me think maybe you all can help me find some more 'old friends' music (or new bff music, not picky).
I rate all of my music with 3-, 4-, or 5-stars (1s and 2s are delete-me or 'spoken/music lesson'), and I noticed recently that out of many gigs of music, I only have 49 songs that make it to a 5-star rating. Of those songs, I would say no more than 10 or so are my 'all-time bests'--songs that I like enough to look up and listen to specifically, or listen to 2 or 3 times in a row if they pop up in rotation. Please help me expand this category!
The music that hits the top of my list is any genre--it comes from a passing clip from TV, movies, threads like this one, and searches for foreign language listening, so anything goes--classical, gregorian chant, bollywood, j-pop, spanish, french, italian, country, rock--the more eclectic the better!

Well, back int he day it was Everclear's "Santa Monica" and Sloan's "The Lines You Amend". A girl actually made me a tape for my car stereo that was nothing but those two songs back-to-back-to-back-to-back etc. for the whole 90 minutes.
And I listened the HELL out of that tape.

Nick Lowe, Cruel to Be Kind. It is impossible for me to listen to it only one -- just the other day, I put it on repeat and listened to it all the way to work (which came to about 8 times). The next closest contender for me is Split Enz, I Got You.

Two or three times in a row? When I get a musical bee in my iPod bonnet, I can listen to it for 50, 60, 70 times or more in a row. When it first came out, I listened to Paper Planes by MIA over a hundred times in a row. Given my top 25 playlist starts with songs that have over 100 on the playcount, there is no way for new songs to get on without getting played many times in a row.

I have found no upper limit to my tolerance for hearing Squeeze's Tempted. Double it up with REM's Fall On Me and I could drive acrss the continent happily with that disc stuck in the changer.

The one-song-on-repeat thing is how I roll with just about anything I like. Then I get bored with the song and find another one, and maybe a few months later I'll come back to it, rinse and repeat.
Currently, Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" is my number one ear-crack. I always hit repeat three or four times whenever it comes up. Next month, it might be something else.
Probably my all-time most-played song is Like a Prayer. I don't think I could ever get tired of that song.

I suppose this is where I have to confess I've become unnaturally obsessed with the Bach Cello Suites over the past year or so. And it's not that I first heard them then, either; I had had a recording long before which I'd listen to from time to time. But I think over the last year, I've been listening to the Suites more than all of my other music combined, and I'm not exaggerating.
You may be familiar with the Prelude to Suite No. 1 from the American Express commercial which uses it and has been playing a lot on TV, but don't judge the Suites by that commercial alone SINCE THEY COMPLETELY RUINED THE STRUCTURE OF THE PRELUDE BY MAKING HORRID, HORRID EDITS TO CUT IT DOWN TO 1 OR 0.5 MINUTES (depending on the version) WHEN THE FULL PRELUDE RUNS ABOUT 2.5 MINUTES or maybe it just seems that way to me since I'm so familiar with the piece now.

I generally cannot stand to listen to anything more than once at a time. I need variety; I get insanely bored very easily. If I'm at an event where the host has accidentally made a short music playlist and I hear a song on repeat, it totally takes me out of the moment.
BUT: as I was finishing a marathon last fall, hurtling toward a PR with only a couple of miles to go and finding my energy stores (and emotional state*) totally drained, my iPod shuffled to the New Pornographers' Star Bodies and I put that shit on repeat 8 or 9 times to churn myself through to the finish line. The combination of the insistent drums, the sudden guitar explosion, and the plaintive vocal harmonies...oh God, it was like ambrosia.
*Yeah. the thing they don't tell you about distance running is that once you go over 20 miles, you become very fragile in the head. Sobbing not from pain, but just because; that sort of thing.

I'm surprised that no one here has said anything by the Beatles or the Rolling Stones (I see a Paul McCartney up there but that doesn't count). Maybe they aren't "esoteric" enough but they aren't esoteric for a reason. Here is my short list of my "i listen to this song on repeat"s from them:

When I was a college student, a friend had made a cassette tape with nothing but repeats of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly". It says something that it wasn't until the tape clicked over (to another 45 minutes) that I realized that something was off. I just thought it was a long, long song.

The only complete album that I listen to this way is Blind Pilot's.
The Beatles: Helter Skelter (any and all covers, with this one being my current favorite).
Portland Is Leaving by Rocky Votolato - I couldn't find the right version on YouTube, but I believe I have the one sold on iTunes. It'd have to be on any all-time-greats mix I put together, and over the years it's shown up on a lot of the CDs I make for long car trips.
In college, my roommate would listen to Layla on repeat because she had it stuck in her head; that'd get it stuck in my head, and then I'd do the same, passing it back on to her. It may not have been healthy, but the fact that I still think it's a great song after that must say something.

Some repeat-worthy songs are for singing at the top of my lungs with the car windows rolled down on a summer afternoon; others are for listening to quietly in bed on a winter early morning. I like to repeat a song incessantly and then retire it, so when I hear it later on it's flavored with a certain time in my life. Of course, I can never manage to retire the essentials:

I actually didn't think much of this song when I first heard it--a forgettable, kind of pretentious ballad stuck in the middle of Let It Be. But during my last year of high school, a teacher gave a meditation in the school church about lots of things: humor; identity on and off stage; and, at the very end, the death of his father a week earlier. He played a solo version of "Across the Universe" and then quietly sat back down.
I remember that moment so well. And others after it, like my first girlfriend teaching the song to herself as I sang along from the bed we shared. Or like the night when we broke up and I listened to the song on repeat for hours. It sounds maudlin, and it probably is, but something about "Across the Universe" reminds me that life is bigger than whatever I'm going through, that everything's going to be all right. "Nothing's gonna change my world..." It's my favorite Beatles song.
On a completely different note: to everyone mentioning Lady Gaga, I see your "Poker Face" and raise you "Neutra Face."
