Help me pick a personalized plate for my Yugo
January 25, 2010 7:58 PM   Subscribe

I've recently purchased a 1990 Yugo GV Plus. I'd like a personalized license plate that captures just how ridiculous this thing is. Neither I nor my friends have come up with anything good in the last week. Help!

Ideally, I'm going for something that says "yes, I know how ridiculous this car is." (I'm also planning on putting an ironic "Fear This" sticker on the back.) Something funny, or witty, or self-deprecating. If it helps, it's red.

The restrictions: 3-7 characters, at least 3 letters.

Unfortunately the best I've got so far is "YUGO GVP" which is factual and declarative, but not really amusing.

Since it does appear to be a hatchback, I suggest:

VICTOR

with a bumper sticker beside it reading 'Hatchback of Notre Dame'.

(Since VICTOR is very likely already taken, you could probably get away with WICTOR, which may even go with YUGO somewhat better).

YUGONE

QTR 21.9 (you'd have to put the dot in there, it's the 1/4 mile drag time for a stock Yugo)

And you'd have to put a "Yeah, it's a Hemi" sticker on there too, maybe some truck-nuts.

I just realized that some people might not have heard the joke:
Q. How do you double the value of a Yugo?
A. Fill the tank with gas! (If it can still hold liquid.)
A. If not, put a gallon of milk in the back seat.

Q. How do you double the value of a Yugo?
A. Fill the tank with gas!
A guy walks into an auto parts shop and says, "I'd like a gas cap for a Yugo." The employee thinks for a minute and says, "Sure, sounds like a fair trade."

I'm not going to the DMV until tomorrow afternoon, so I'd love to see more suggestions! I'm going to mark a few now, though, to give an idea of what's striking my fancy.

4ster: 55hp (too short though, maybe "55HRSES"), MATCHBX
smackfu: HALFIAT (and not the good half)
I EAT TAPAS: YESIRUN (perfect self-deprecation)
gofargogo: QTR219 (not sure how many would get it, but I like it)
Cold Lurkey: 3ACTABA (probably nobody would get it, but awesome)

And I have to say jamjam's suggestion of "VICTOR" is awesome (I really love it) but it's a touch contrived. :)

Since Cyrillic isn't an option, ZASTAVA is the purist's choice. But really, you can't go wrong with anything that references the brand or country of origin. Personally, I like "YO TITO."

That might be cool. It seems a bit harsh to continue publicly beating on the Yugo (car) after the violent self-destruction of Yugoslavia (the country). From what I understand, they were actually pretty decent, if minimal, cars.

If you get HALFIAT you should get some metallic raised metal letters that spell out Tony's Car.

turducken, I'm curious: do you think ZASTAVA is preferable to 3ACTABA because the latter isn't a good approximation of the Cyrillic? Despite my intention on starting the thread, I'm starting to like this option more. If do go this way, I wouldn't want to choose 3ACTABA if I'd just be making a goof of myself to anyone who might get it.

Like my friend's mom's 1983 Mercedes 300D with the plate "DAS GOOT". Eeeuggh.

Still getting the "Fear This" sticker though.

3ACTABA is not just an approximation, it is the actual Cyrillic spelling. Bulgarian website. However, as an actual born-and-raised Eastern European, at 25 years old I was young to get the reference (I looked it up in Wikipedia because it sounded vaguely familiar). I can't imagine you'll get many laughs out of something this obscure.

I personally like "PAIDFOR", "PAIDOFF" and "ALLMINE", suggesting that getting to that state with that particular car is some kind of accomplishment.

Any time you can put Cyrillic on a license plate, I'd say go for it.
(I saw a car in DC with the plate MOCBA, which is one of my favorites, but probably a lot more people 'got it' than would get 3ACTABA)

3ACTABA looks like it must mean something, but most won't know what. But you probably will run into a few folks who do, and that would be cool.

Excellent to know!

"3ACTABA looks like it must mean something, but most won't know what. But you probably will run into a few folks who do, and that would be cool."

That's precisely why I'm enjoying it. I love extra-obscure references.

The form's got space for three options (in case one you write down is already taken), and I think I'll be filling in these:

3ACTABA
55HRSES
QTR219

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone!

3ACTABA is not just an approximation, it is the actual Cyrillic spelling.

Agreed.

As for the meaning, it literally means 'the flag' and derives from the factory's earlier name 'Crvena Zastava' (red flag).

My vote goes to that one.
