The Wife and I are having our first child this summer (yikes!, yea!). Anyone know of some groovy sites to shop for cute and tasteful baby stuff? posted by ducktape to shopping (24 comments total)

Off the top of my head: Modernseed which is cool if a bit pricey, Little Paper Planes for babysuits. The New York Times Magazine had a whole issue devoted to the design of childhood; it is a bit annoying but has articles on clothing, furniture, childhood activity engineering, toys, food, etc. What does groovy mean? posted by fionab at 10:10 AM on January 25, 2005
Apartment Therapy has a whole slew of modern children's furniture and gadgets. Kid O has cool toys too. posted by fionab at 10:17 AM on January 25, 2005
Do not buy ANY stuffed animals. You will receive at least three billion of them as gifts and your kid won't do anything more than drool or chew on them for at least a year and a half. posted by bondcliff at 10:18 AM on January 25, 2005
Once you find a place (or places) you like, REGISTER! You have no idea how many relatives you have until they start sending things for the baby. Make sure they send you what you want/need. posted by bh at 10:34 AM on January 25, 2005
Old Navy actually does pretty well in the cute baby clothes department. Close second is Baby Gap. posted by grateful at 10:37 AM on January 25, 2005
Links above are just for clothes - BuyBuyBaby is a good all-around choice posted by grateful at 10:39 AM on January 25, 2005
I am not a parent, but most of my friends look for used baby clothes. There are swap shops likeBaby Place, and twice around the bin, and items on E-bay. I know it sounds cold, but baby clothes are damn expensive, and they out grow things before they wear-out.
Registering is a good idea. Most people really don't know what to buy, but they know parents could use a hand. If you don't direct them, friends will give you a thousand frilly things that your child will never wear except for a camera.
Congratulations. Babies are a blast. posted by gesamtkunstwerk at 10:53 AM on January 25, 2005
They aren't very tasteful, but I think theseshirts from glarkware are funny. posted by amarynth at 11:25 AM on January 25, 2005
I don't have a kid, but I found this site when a friend pointed it out to me when shopping for her kid. They are the cutest shoes, and they get serious coolness points for the business name.
Don't know where you're located but my G/F buys all the stuff for her neices and nephews at this very cool little shop, Soho Baby. posted by Heminator at 12:44 PM on January 25, 2005
Kid Brother has some pretty cool clothes for boys. I picked a few pieces of clothing at the One of a Kind show in Toronto for a nephew's x-mas gift, and his parents just love them. posted by purephase at 12:45 PM on January 25, 2005

Posh Tots - I have not ordered from them but know people who have - they were pleased with the selection of clothes. posted by MLIS at 1:37 PM on January 25, 2005
I have been looking for an excuse to buy something from infantile. The Mommy shirt is hilarious. posted by whatnot at 2:11 PM on January 25, 2005
I just got my infant cribset from the Land Of Nod, I like what I got. posted by Gooney at 2:13 PM on January 25, 2005
This company has the most beautiful diaper bags I've ever seen. posted by Specklet at 3:08 PM on January 25, 2005
congratulations! I am a month away from #2 myself.
One Step Ahead has some handy gadgets, clothes and toys. But most importantly, they have onesie extenders, which are a terrific invention.
Also - those Petunia Picklebottom bags that Specklet posted are gorgeous...I'm thinking of buying one this time around. posted by kittyloop at 5:54 PM on January 25, 2005
Thrift shops. No, I'm serious. Every time I go to one I'm amazed at the great kid and baby clothes I see there - Gap, Osh Kosh, all those name brands. Babies grow so quickly that the clothes are in great shape and still in style. And you can soon save hundreds of dollars. posted by orange swan at 7:15 PM on January 25, 2005
I'm not sure if this falls short of your "tasteful" criterion, but I've always hoped that Nippaz With Attitude will still be around when I have kids. posted by xueexueg at 8:20 PM on January 25, 2005
